With these paintings, I think about the realities

With these paintings, I think about the realities that we project onto these objects- mythologies, apocalyptic potentials, or perhaps even ideas of ourselves in isolation or moving along paths prescribed by unknown forces or invisible hands over which they have no control. Shown usually in series or grids, these lonely wandering asteroids encounter beings, stars, and rays of paint that disrupt, mine, or bring to light their otherwise shadowed existence.

With the Heavenly Bodies series, I am painting these cosmic masses floating through space with ink and gouache on paper. Inspired somewhat by images beamed to Earth from various space missions or theoretical models of masses and orbits, the paintings imagine these uninhabited planetoids as intergalactic Philosopher’s stones or suiseki. .

I built this Lego dice tower for the new Dungeons

I built this Lego dice tower for the new Dungeons and Dragons campaign that I started DMing this year. I was wanting to laser cut a wood one but couldn’t find a laser cutter around me and, well, I have a few Legos. I have no idea how many legos it took but it probably took more hours to build than the adventures I’ve got lined up!

One of the thing I try to impress upon students in

One of the thing I try to impress upon students in my Humanities classes is the importance of making a mark. It undergirds the assignments I have them do- whether creative or writing or both- that they should care about the marks they putting down in drawings or words. Even if they’re not the most eloquent or polished- our marks share are presence at a particular place and time and not only record our being somewhere but are a place where we actually are being. With this in mind when we look at an artist’s work, we have the opportunity to see their marks and trace their presence, allowing us to connect with another being even over thousands of years.

I never got around to posting this but I made this D&G illustration as a part of a mini-travel portfolio back when I was vaguely looking to find an art rep in 2016. That summer I stayed at home with Cora on my forced paternity leave after being layed off from Chicago State University. It was fun to get some drawing in while hanging out with our then newborn cub.

Well, this morning we woke to a dead battery, having left the the back light on our Subaru on all night (after yesterday’s hike in the St Mihiel Woods in Tinley Park). So while we waited on AAA to jump us, the kiddo and I got to read Dragon and Goat’s Pi-Rat Island before she headed to school. It’s hard to believe the book came out 12 years ago- it’s almost a teenager!

I’m very excited to announce the release (finall

I’m very excited to announce the release (finally!) of Drawing on the Past, Vol. 2 (https://www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/D/Drawing-the-Past-Volume-2) that features essays on comics that “seek to examine the many ways in which history worldwide has been explored and (re)represented through comics and how history is a complex construction of imagination, reality, and manipulation.”

A chapter from my comic Beyond Paper Walls was selected for the collection along with other great written essays on comics and comics studies.

Published by the University Press of Mississippi and edited by Dorian L. Alexander, Michael Goodrum, and Philip Smith, the 2 books are a great way to dig into some of the research surrounding the field of comics exploring “questions of diversity and relationality, addressing differences between nations and the cultural, historical, and economic threads that bind them together, however loosely, and however much those bonds might chafe.”

I’m particularly glad to have my work included since I think it’s pretty important that in the field of comics studies- the form of comics be used to investigate and research our past and carve out paths into the future!

This began as a design for the Dragon and Goat tattoo that I'll eventually be getting. After inking it by hand, I used it as my first #procreate practice drawings to digitally ink then color in my new iPad. I stepped away from it to practice on some other drawings and just came back to to it to finish up- so feeling much better about the transition to more fully digital stuff.

中秋节快乐! Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! So this is a couple days late but we got caught up eating moon cakes! Plus, this is my first official illustration from the digital sketchbook that is now my new iPad. It’s been a bit of a pain getting a handle of Procreate’s brushes for inking- and I’m not super-satisfied with how different it is than inking on paper…but I guess it gets the job done!
